The Story of a Man I Know!

Do you know this man? He was a Union Carpenter in the 60s, and his family, which consisted of three sisters and a brother, lived in a typical suburban home.

This man, wanting to put his skills to work for the family, built a beautiful rancher in 1966. His wife decorated it to her liking but within their budget. They would go on one vacation a year if possible. Their home was surrounded by majestic Ash trees, which added to its beauty. The Ash trees were a defining feature of the house and provided natural shade and cooling during the summer and a picturesque view in the winter. The girls, being fans of “Gone With the Wind” and “Wuthering Heights,” named it “The Crooked Ash.”

The fall of the "Crooked Ash"

His job required him to travel far for work, so he started his own local business to stay close to the family. As the girls grew up, married, and left the house, they were left alone. Eventually, he retired and lived a moderate life with his wife, enjoying family dinners and cookouts. Their grandchildren got to experience the same childhood we had. However, as he aged, the maintenance and property taxes of the home became a burden. He eventually had to take out a reverse mortgage, but the added expenses made it harder for him to stay in the house. The reverse mortgage was not a solution for my his financial difficulties. It even disadvantaged him because money was needed to pay his property taxes! The biggest blow came when the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle infested the area, and he had to pay thousands of dollars to remove the infected trees. The Ash Trees that once brought beauty to the house now caused grief, as they lost their limbs and dropped them like spears, posing a danger to the house and the people living in it. Repairs and taxes, made it impossible for this man to stay in the house he built and loved.
